Give an Account for What You Believe

These days of the early 21st century are challenging indeed.  Every preacher worth his salt can talk for days about the compelling issues that confront the church: family disintegration, moral decay, consumerism, et. al. and etc.

Of all the issues, though, one of the most concerning is the neglect of truth.  American culture really does shape us to believe that nothing can really be known to be true.  Even if truth does exist, people feel, it really doesn't matter.  "I'm just trying to get along."  Persisting in this foolishness is like "gagging God," according to D. A. Carson is a book by that title.  If we live as if truth doesn't matter, we will never hear from the God who speaks truth.

Jesus said so clearly, "If you continue in my word you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free."  (John 8:31, 32).  The truth is out there, and it can be known.  And it will set us free.  As believers we must contend for the truth.  We must take it seriously and encourage those we influence to take it seriously.

Taking truth seriously means we need to think, to learn, to read, to study.

The internet is an incredible resource for truth.  Certainly there is tons and tons of foolishness there.  (Do not for a moment believe everything you see!)  When you find a good site that challenges your mind and lifts up truth, go back to it often.  Share it with others.  Certainly let me know.

One of our goals for our website is to help believers find better websites that will take them deeper into the truth.  One such site is The Veritas Forum (veritas.org).  They are a group that pulls together the brightest minds in the academic community to share the most compelling issues confronting us today.  The stuff they share is challenging and stimulating.  Spend time there and you will learn how to talk about your faith in a cynical, skeptical world.

I commend it to you highly.  Peter tells us to "always be prepared to give a deffence for the hope that is with us."  (1 Peter 3:15).  The Veritas Forum will help equip you to do just that.

Go right to veritas.org.  We have a link at "Christian Resources" and "Growth in Discipleship."

Blessings,

Kyle
